Madonna ‘falls in love with diamond bracelet’

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Madonna has her sights set on a diamond bracelet and jewels formerly belonging to the Windsor family.

Madonna has her eye on a diamond bracelet with a regal history.

According to the Daily Mail, the pop star was seen trying on items displayed at a private viewing of the Windsor collection at Sotheby's.

One exhibit the celebrity is rumoured to have taken a fancy to is an onyx and diamond panther bracelet, which is being showcased alongside jewels gifted by Edward VIII to his American wife Wallis Simpson in the 1930s.

Madonna is said to be directing a film about Edward's abdication and has had his famous jewels replicated for the movie.

In a New York auction of Bernard Madoff's possessions last week, the former financier's wife's 10.5-carat engagement ring was sold to a mystery bidder for $550,000 (£344,000) – the item changed hands alongside such valuables as a Steinway and Sons grand piano, various items of clothing and a pair of velveteen slippers.

Rare pink diamond sells for record £29m

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

A rare pink diamond has been sold at auction for a record-breaking £29 million.

British jewellery trader Laurence Graff bid over the phone for the precious stone, which went under the hammer at a Sotheby's event in Geneva.

Weighing 24.78 carats, the gem, known as the 'fancy intense pink' is now the most expensive jewel sold at auction, almost doubling the record set by the 35.56-carat blue Wittelsbach-Graff stone, which changed hands for £15.2 million in 2008, and was also purchased by the wealthy investor.

Mr Graff has reportedly named his new possession the Graff Pink and said his purchase was the most fabulous diamond he had ever seen in his career.

The jewel, currently set as a ring, first appeared on the market 60 years ago when it was bought from the renowned Harry Winston, and had remained in private collections ever since.

In a recent auction of jailed Bernard Madoff's possessions, an anonymous buyer took home the engagement ring the former financier had proposed with for $550,000 (£344,000).

Rare pink diamonds set a global market trend

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Argyle pink diamonds have gone for a record tender to global buyers, setting a new fashion for coloured stones.

Rare pink Argyle diamonds are growing in popularity in the global market, according to reports.

The Israeli Diamond Institute revealed a record tender of 55 rare pink diamonds – which could be used in diamond rings and diamond earrings – has been sold to several buyers from around the world, including burgeoning markets in India and China.

Mined by the Rio Tinto Group, the collection of rare coloured stones included the 2.02-carat Argyle Mystra, a much-coveted purple gem.

General manager for sales and marketing at the company Jean-Marc Lieberherr was quoted as saying that the response to the diamond tender was "a clear indication of the growing appreciation of the rarity and value of Argyle pink diamonds".

These figures follow news that a 185-carat recently discovered at the Letseng mine in Lesotho could be worth as much as £7 million. The facility is the source of three of the world's top 20 largest diamonds.

Latest Lesotho diamond could go for £7m

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

A diamond weighing 185 carats might sell for £7 million.

An 185-carat rough diamond found in Lesotho that may be used in diamond jewellery could be worth almost £7 million.

According to the Daily Mail, analysts from Panmure Gordon & Co, an investment banking group, have estimated the mineral will sell for between £4.6 million and £6.9 million.

The stone will probably be cut down into smaller jewels, which might be made into diamond rings and diamond pendants.

Discovered at the end of October, the finding is of particular importance because it has come from the main mining pipe at the Letseng site, rather than the satellite pipe that has been the source of large precious rocks in the past.

A 196-carat white stone was recovered from the facility in August this year and the mine is the source of three of the world's top 20 largest diamonds.

These valuable discoveries will speed up production plans at the mine site, owner Gem Diamonds said, adding the specimen is "exceptional", with its value calculated according to colour and quality.
