Celebrities back Botswana diamond boycott

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Celebrities are boycotting Botswana diamonds in protest of the poor treatment of tribespeople.

Celebrities are endorsing a boycott that aims to stop diamonds sources in Botswana being used in items such as engagement rings and diamond jewellery.

Survival International – a worldwide organisation working for tribal peoples' rights – has launched its protest today (November 3rd).

In 2002, Botswana bushmen were removed from their homes to further the country's diamond mining, even though at the time the government did not declare that diamond deposits existed at the site.

In spite of winning legal rights to their land, the tribesmen and women are not allowed access to vital water deposits.

Joanna Lumley, Gillian Anderson and Sophie Okonedo are some of the high-profile supporters of the ban, which also encourages a boycott on tourism to Botswana.

Director of Survival Stephen Corry said: "People should know that far from being an expensive token of eternal love, Botswana diamonds are a symbol of the oppression of Africa's people."

Sharon Osbourne gets diamond jewellery gift from daughter

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Kelly Osbourne gave her mother Sharon a diamond ring for her birthday earlier this month, the 25-year-old has revealed in her magazine column.

Kelly Osbourne gave her mother Sharon a diamond ring to mark her 58th birthday, the star has revealed.

In her column for magazine Closer, the 25-year-old said she handed the diamond jewellery over to her mum – a former judge on X-Factor – earlier this month.

Kelly admitted she "couldn't figure out what to get" for Sharon, who she described as the sort of person who will buy something for herself is she really wants it.

"I ended up getting her the most beautiful ring with a moonstone and diamonds," she remarked, adding a cake from a bakery in Los Angeles was also part of the gift.

Diamonds seem to be a popular choice as gifts among celebrities.

Lady Gaga recently gave Beyonce a diamond-studded whip as a 29th birthday present along with some lingerie.

The duo worked together on Gaga's hit single Telephone earlier in the year and Beyonce was said to have "squealed with excitement" when she was given the items.

British women ‘would say no to engagement ring’

Monday, October 4th, 2010

New research has revealed a third of British women would ask for a different engagement ring if they did not like the design, while nearly half would like to pick the ring themselves.

A third of British women would ask their partner to change their engagement ring if they did not like the one used for the proposal, new research has revealed.

The study, from shopping channel QVC, showed 64 per cent would ask their other half to return the engagement ring in favour of another one, while 41 per cent would like to pick the jewellery themselves.

Over one-in-ten (13 per cent) said an engagement ring is seen as an indication of their partner's wealth and their own social status, with singer Katy Perry – who is engaged to Russell Brand – said to have the most desirable engagement ring.

Commenting on the findings, relationship expert Jo Barrett said celebrities have a big influence on people's expectations.

"We see celebrities flashing their big diamond rings and everyone wants to be like a celebrity," she remarked.

Kimberley Selwood, a jewellery designer, recently told the Aberdeen Press and Journal men need to prioritise clarity over size when selecting a diamond engagement ring.
