Celebrities back Botswana diamond boycott

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Celebrities are boycotting Botswana diamonds in protest of the poor treatment of tribespeople.

Celebrities are endorsing a boycott that aims to stop diamonds sources in Botswana being used in items such as engagement rings and diamond jewellery.

Survival International – a worldwide organisation working for tribal peoples' rights – has launched its protest today (November 3rd).

In 2002, Botswana bushmen were removed from their homes to further the country's diamond mining, even though at the time the government did not declare that diamond deposits existed at the site.

In spite of winning legal rights to their land, the tribesmen and women are not allowed access to vital water deposits.

Joanna Lumley, Gillian Anderson and Sophie Okonedo are some of the high-profile supporters of the ban, which also encourages a boycott on tourism to Botswana.

Director of Survival Stephen Corry said: "People should know that far from being an expensive token of eternal love, Botswana diamonds are a symbol of the oppression of Africa's people."

Scheme aims to tackle Zimbabwe’s illicit diamond trade

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Measures are being taken in Zimbabwe to prevent abuse and smuggling in its diamond fields.

Human Rights Watch reports that the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme will halt the trade of diamonds – which are popular in engagement rings and wedding rings – from the country's Marange fields.

The initiative aims to tackle the ongoing conflicts connected with sourcing and trading of stones from the region.

Studies made by the organisation from July through to September 2010 noted that much of the area is under the jurisdiction of the Zimbabwe Defence Force soldiers, who are said to be involved in smuggling and threatening the local community.

Rona Pegali of Human Rights Watch said: "Without these kinds of reforms, international consumers risk purchasing 'blood diamonds'."

The Kimberley Process includes governments and members of precious stone industries who meet annually to review the guidelines in diamond trade and provide a certification scheme that ensures that exported gems are conflict-free.

Ashley Olsen to be seen sporting engagement ring?

Friday, October 8th, 2010

Star of The Hangover Justin Bartha is to propose to Ashley Olsen in the near future, according to reports.

Ashley Olsen could soon be sporting an engagement ring after it emerged her boyfriend is planning to propose in the near future.

According to Us Magazine, Justin Bartha, who has been dating the former child star for two years, has been seen browsing engagement rings.

Speaking to the news provider, an unnamed source said Bartha – who starred in The Hangover – has already popped the question in the past, only to be turned down.

"She said no," the individual said, but another insider added the pair seem to make a good couple.

"They mix well with each other's friends and calm each other," the person said, while the first person also added the couple both want a "low-key" wedding.

Life & Style recently reported Seth Rogen – star of Superbad and Pineapple Express – has also proposed to his girlfriend Lauren Miller.

The pair have been dating since 2004 and Miller was quoted as saying she was unsure whether Rogen would ever pop the question.

Lee could win a £1,500 diamond or diamond ring [Ref. 0213]

LEE is between 30 and 50 and is in a relationship (but not yet engaged or married). Lee LOVES the brand-name Diamond Geezer ® and described the DiamondGeezer.com web site as UNEQUALLED.

He added······

This is a really good site. I watched the dragons den issue and have to say I was dubious of the name but you’ve certainly changed my view. The website is classy and very innovative in its approach to selling diamonds. The name stuck in my mind and the website bowled me over. My comment is that to a novice buyer, specifically of engagement rings as I am, it is not immeadiately apparent from the home page what to click on to get where you need to go. Both wedding and eternity rings are specifically listed but not engagment rings, which I can see being a significant reason for people visiting your site.
In addition, I spent quite a long time browsing diamonds and ring styles and came up with many alternatives. It would be nice to have some method of saving these so I could compare them side by side, perhaps even with a personal account so I could research over a number of days and revisit my favourites.
