When people think of diamonds, the most common thing to pop into their minds are colourless diamonds (white diamonds). Obviously colourless diamonds are the most common & most popular to buy, but not for long.
Coloured diamonds are slowly making their way into pieces of jewellery & being classed as “excellent alternative investments” and the “trendiest asset class to invest in”. Last year the collection of Argyle Pink Diamonds made their way into Kensington Palace to be displayed as some of the rarest & most beautiful diamonds ever to be seen. Another coloured diamond to make it to the news last year was the 12 carat Martian Pink diamond which sold for an astonishing $17.4 million.
The price of pink diamonds has increased by 443% over the past 10 years. With this being said; pink diamonds cost millions, meaning it is only a fortunate few who can actually take these diamonds home. The majority of pink diamonds are sold at auction, making them a rare (and very expensive) find.

The beautiful collection of Argyle Pink Diamonds has arrived at Kensington Palace to be displayed for London to see in an exhibition called ‘Out of the Vault: Pink Diamonds & Royalty’. The rare collection of jewellery is worth over $60 million & was inspired by Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
The first pink piece of pink diamond jewellery seen worn by Queen Elizabeth II was a flower spray brooch, containing a solitaire pink diamond set in the centre. This brooch was named ‘The Williamson Pink’ & was created by Cartier.
Pink diamonds are admired & treasured as throughout history they have been related to Kings, Emperors, Princes & Potentates. The exhibition of the Argyle Pink Diamonds fits in extremely well with this memorable Diamond Jubilee year, making the diamonds even more special.

The ‘Martian Pink’ is an extremely rare 12 carat pink diamond that is so adored that it sold for $17.4 million (£11.1 million) in Hong Kong on Tuesday 29th May. The name ‘Martian’ came from the celebrity master jeweller Harry Winston who was so impressed that the Americans had landed on Mars in 1976 that he decided to look into his inventory & find a rough diamond that would more than likely be pink. After cutting the diamond to perfection, Harry Winston unveiled the most intense pink diamond he had ever seen or cut before. The current owner of the ‘Martian Pink’ wanted the diamond to be sold in Hong Kong where it would demand a higher price. The buyer of this beautiful rare pink diamond is anonymous & placed the winning bid over the phone, he/she must be extremely proud to own such a rare & beautiful diamond.

The famous Christie’s Auction House in New York was filled with excited bidders on Tuesday 17th April. In May 2011 Huguette Clark, one of the last heiresses of America’s Gilded Age, died at the grand age of 104 leaving behind her collection of jewels. Huguette Clark was said to have lived a reclusive life in her later years & she had stored her diamonds & precious gems in a vault since the 1940′s.
The jewel to stir up the most excitement on Tuesday was a 9ct pink diamond which has been given the name ‘Clark Pink’. The Clark Pink was estimated to fetch around $6-8 million, but little did the excited bidders know it was going to round up a massive $15.7 million. This wasn’t the only one of Clark’s jewels to go under the hammer, also being sold was a 19.86ct rectangular-cut diamond ring by Cartier that sold for $3.1 million; an Art Deco diamond bracelet by Cartier that sold for $578,500 and a ruby, sapphire, emerald and gold bracelet by Tiffany & Co. selling for $266,500. The collection was part of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale that took a total of $70.7 million.
