Buying an engagement ring is a challenging task and one that may seem impossible. Buying an engagement ring is a very special task, it’s the symbol & celebration of the future a couple will share together. An engagement ring traditionally holds a diamond or multiple diamonds and can also feature precious gems such as emerald or topaz. When buying a diamond engagement ring it is important to research & discuss the diamond cut, colour & clarity as these three factors will determine how brilliant your engagement ring is. Many people mistake the cut of a diamond for the shape when infact the cut is the lines cut into a diamond to reflect light & make it sparkle. The colour can vary from a ‘D’ all the way down to a ‘Z’ and ‘Z’ is the most yellow. A ‘D’ colour diamond is colourless & is the rarest, most beautiful colour grade to buy. The clarity references the natural internal flaws of a diamond, for example if a diamond had a clarity of ‘IF’ that is short for ‘internally flawless’, meaning there are no visible marks inside the diamond to corrupt light play which creates sparkle. Who said buying an engagement ring was simple?

The famous Christie’s Auction House in New York was filled with excited bidders on Tuesday 17th April. In May 2011 Huguette Clark, one of the last heiresses of America’s Gilded Age, died at the grand age of 104 leaving behind her collection of jewels. Huguette Clark was said to have lived a reclusive life in her later years & she had stored her diamonds & precious gems in a vault since the 1940′s.
The jewel to stir up the most excitement on Tuesday was a 9ct pink diamond which has been given the name ‘Clark Pink’. The Clark Pink was estimated to fetch around $6-8 million, but little did the excited bidders know it was going to round up a massive $15.7 million. This wasn’t the only one of Clark’s jewels to go under the hammer, also being sold was a 19.86ct rectangular-cut diamond ring by Cartier that sold for $3.1 million; an Art Deco diamond bracelet by Cartier that sold for $578,500 and a ruby, sapphire, emerald and gold bracelet by Tiffany & Co. selling for $266,500. The collection was part of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale that took a total of $70.7 million.

Peregrine Diamonds has discovered a number of precious gems that could soon find their way into diamond engagement rings.

Among the haul us a 1.15-carat diamond and Eric Friedland, chief executive of Peregrine, described the find as "very significant".
"CH-31, at five hectares, is the largest kimberlite discovered at Chidliak to date and the fifth kimberlite with economic potential in arctic settings," he explained.
Mr Friedland added the company is considering carrying out more exploration work at Ch-31 during 2011, including recovering a mini-bulk sample.
Peregrine has uncovered two new diamond districts in Canada since 2007 – Chidliak and Qilaq on southern Baffin Island and Banuq, located in the eastern Arctic region.
