Same sex marriages have only become acceptable in the past few years causing a divide in the 21st century & the Church of England. The church believes that if it were to introduce same sex marriages then it would lead to being forced out of its role of conducting weddings on behalf of the state. The Church of England’s 13 page submission states that ‘such a move would alter the intrinsic nature of marriage as a union of a man and a woman, as enshrined in human institutions throughout history.’ The document also includes, ‘Marriage benefits society in many ways, not only by promoting mutuality and fidelity, but also by acknowledging an underlying biological complimentarily which for many includes the possibility of procreation.’
The extremely homophobic Coalition for Marriage group, that tries to deny equal rights for gay & lesbian couples, created a petition to oppose same sex marriages & handed it into the Government with over 500,000 signatures. A lot of the people against gay marriages class themselves as Christian but rarely go to church showing that it is more a matter of opinion rather than following the Church of England law.
The government are hoping for the law to be changed by 2015 for same sex marriages to be legally acceptable.
