Filming tiny, unofficial ‘off-piste’ digs, man and pick axe down a hole, creates a totally false image of the industry. Gold mining working conditions have improved from 10 years ago, but, like the mining of all metals, still have a long way to go but can only be improved if the revenue is earned and reinvested.

Work is due to resume at a diamond unit in Botswana after employees decided to halt their two-week pay strike.

Work is to resume at a Botswana-based diamond unit, according to reports.

Employees at the Diamond Trading Company of Bostwana have officially ended their two-week pay strike and are set to go back to work while discussions regarding their wages forge ahead, Bloomberg states.

Kago Mmopi, spokesman for the company, said: "The offer remains the same. The union has decided to suspend the strike and continue with negotiations while workers resume their duties."

However, the possibility of the diamond workers resuming the strike has not been rules out by union officials.

The workers at the firm – which is jointly owned by the Botswana government and De Beers – are demanding a pay rise of eight per cent, as well as improved working conditions.

However, managers are only prepared to offer the employees a six per cent increase to their wages.

Industrial action at the diamond unit began on October 10th after talks between the two parties broke down.
