Gold, symbol Au from its Latin name aurum is a highly sought-after precious metal which is dense, soft, shiny and the most malleable and ductile of the known metals. Pure gold has a bright yellow colour traditionally considered attractive however because of the softness of pure (24ct.) gold; it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewellery, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, colour and other properties. 18ct. yellow gold contains higher percentages of copper, silver or other base metals in the alloy. Nickel is toxic and use in gold is controlled by legislation in Europe but NOT in America. Hallmarking is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom however in other countries hallmarking is done voluntarily, and in many others is not carried out at all. In countries where hallmarking is carried out, small symbols are made to the item which identifies information such as caratage, country of manufacture and company that manufactured it. That would be us ;-)
