18ct. HALLMARKED WHITE GOLD

18ct. White gold alloys can be made with palladium or nickel. HOWEVER nickel is toxic and its use in white gold is controlled by legislation in Europe but NOT in America and other countries. At DiamondGeezer.com we use alternative white gold alloys which are based on are more expensive palladium, silver and other white metals (World Gold Council). Alloying pure gold (24ct.) to make 18ct white gold with the use of other alloys results in an ‘off-white’ colour. It is an industry standard to plate finished white gold wedding rings and jewellery with rhodium [a precious pure white metal] to achieve that ‘bright-white’ showroom condition, but be aware that the plating will wear off. High-carat white gold alloys are far more resistant to corrosion than are either pure silver or sterling silver. Hallmarking is a legal requirement in the United Kingdom however in other countries hallmarking is done voluntarily, and in many others is not carried out at all. In the UK; where hallmarking is carried out, small symbols are made to the item which identifies information such as caratage, country of manufacture and company that manufactured it.
